Georgian Heavy Baluster Deceptive Bowl Dram Glass

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, deceptive toastmaster's heavy baluster dram glass dating from the early part of the 18th century, c1725.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 300 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl thickens as it descends to reduce the amount of fluid it can hold and sits on an inverted baluster stem containing an air tear and a conical, folded foot which measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The glass is 13 cm (5.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of small unburst bubbles in the base of the bowl and another bubble in the metal of the fold of the foot, all dating from manufacture. There are two collector's stickers to the underside of the foot.

English lead glass weighing in at 285 g. (~ 10 oz.).

Provenance: The Tanyards Collection, East Sussex.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian deceptive dram glass is an 18th-century drinking vessel crafted with thick glass walls inside the bowl to hold a smaller volume of alcohol than its external size suggests.

These glasses were hand-blown using lead flint glass, characterised by a distinct weight, high refractive index, hand-finished pontil marks, and stem knops often containing air tear inclusions.

Authentic examples display a dark or greyish tint characteristic of early lead glass, a snapped or ground pontil mark under the foot, minor hand-blown symmetry variations, and base wear scratches.

Antique stemware can be styled inside a lit glass display cabinet, arranged along a mahogany sideboard top, or placed among vintage barware accessories on a library shelf.

Wash gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild liquid soap, avoiding hot water and dishwashers, and dry with a soft microfibre towel to prevent clouding or thermal shock.
