FAQs

Victorian pier cabinets, popular during the mid-to-late 19th century, were specifically designed to fit the wall space between two windows, often featuring glazed doors or mirrored backs to reflect light into formal reception rooms.

These pieces typically utilized a softwood or hardwood secondary carcass veneered with highly figured burr walnut, accented with marquetry inlay, gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts, and hand-painted Sevres-style porcelain plaques.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber construction methods, hand-cut dovetails, traditional hand-rubbed French polish finishes, the quality of the brass or ormolu mounts, and the genuine age of the porcelain panels and internal woodwork.

Such ornate historical pieces provide a striking focal point in contemporary spaces when contrasted against minimalist walls, serving as sophisticated storage or display units in living rooms and reception halls.

Preservation requires keeping wooden furniture out of direct sunlight and away from rapid temperature fluctuations, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying high-quality microcrystalline wax to protect the delicate French polish.
