Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rococo style mirrors are defined by asymmetrical composition, fluid curves, dynamic scrollwork, and motifs drawn from nature such as acanthus leaves, shells (rocaille), and floral garlands. Originating in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV, the design emphasizes lightness, elegance, and intricate surface decoration.

Traditional Rococo frames were typically carved from solid wood, such as linden or pine, and coated with gesso, a smooth mixture of chalk and glue. Water gilding using thin layers of gold leaf was then applied over a clay bole base and burnished to create a reflective metallic finish.

Authentic 18th-century mirrors exhibit hand-carved joinery, irregularities in frame symmetry, and original mercury glass with subtle dark oxidisation spots. Later 19th-century revival pieces often use plaster or composite moldings over wood frames, flatter backboards, and uniform silvered glass.

An ornate gilded mirror functions as a focal architectural accent when juxtaposed against simple, minimalist backdrops or dark painted walls. Positioning the piece above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantle creates contrast between traditional carved detailing and clean modern lines.

Gilded finishes should be dusted gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfiber feather duster to prevent flaking. Liquid cleansers, water, and commercial polishes must be avoided, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso and cause the gold leaf to lift.
