Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French giltwood mirrors are defined by timber frames carved with ornate classical or Rococo revival details, sealed with gesso, and finished in thin sheets of gold leaf. Designs frequently incorporate floral motifs, acanthus leaves, and lattice diaperwork patterns.

These frames were typically constructed from softwood or hardwood bases, layered with white gesso mouldings, coated with clay bole (often reddish-brown), and detailed with hand-applied gold leaf. The reflective pane consisted of mercury-gilded or early silvered glass.

Authentic pieces show evidence of hand-carved joinery on the wooden backing, natural oxidation or foxing on the glass, and subtle wear revealing the underlying reddish clay bole beneath the gilding. Modern reproductions often use synthetic resins, uniform spray paint, or modern lightweight backing boards.

A giltwood mirror functions effectively as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Combining the detailed historic gilding with clean modern lines creates visual contrast in minimalist or contemporary settings.

Dust the ornate frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth without applying water or chemical cleaners, which can dissolve gesso or strip gold leaf. Keep the mirror away from damp areas and direct heat sources to prevent timber warping and finish cracking.
