19th Century Gilt Framed Cherub Bracket Mirror

19th century
Description

This small Victorian bracket mirror is elaborately carved with cherubs and a variety of flowers including roses, forget me nots and lilies, which in the Victorian era were symbols of love and romance. The mirror plate, which is original, is finely engraved with floral swags and ribbons. This beautifully shaped mirror was perhaps given as a token of love.

The mirror has the original back board and is in untouched country house condition, there are some misses to the gilding but these do not detract from the charm of this typically Victorian mirror.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A giltwood cherub bracket mirror is a decorative wall-mounted piece combining a mirrored plate, carved putti or cherub figures, and an integrated shelf or bracket at the base, commonly produced during the 19th-century Rococo Revival period.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved timber or molded gesso over a wooden core, finished with gold leaf gilding and fitted with etched or clear glass mirror plates.

Authentic examples often display natural surface patina, reddish bole clay visible beneath worn gold leaf, hand-carved joinery on the reverse, and subtle surface variations in the etched mirrored glass.

Position the mirror on a narrow feature wall, above an entryway console, or within a gallery wall arrangement, utilizing the integrated bracket shelf to support a small porcelain ornament or sculptural object.

Dust the carved gilding gently with a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or damp cloths that could compromise the gold leaf and underlying gesso layer.
