Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A monks bench, traditionally known as a table chair or settle table, dates back to medieval times when multi-functional furniture was essential for small spaces. The hinged back could tilt forward to create a makeshift table for dining or writing.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid oak using traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged frames, and hand-carved panels. Hardware typically includes hand-forged iron hinges and fixings.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, patina, and the type of fixings used. Hand-cut peg joints, irregular adze marks, and deep oxidisation within the grain indicate age, whereas modern screws or uniform machine cutting suggest a later reproduction.

A monks bench serves as a functional statement piece in hallways, providing concealed storage whilst anchoring modern minimalist decor with rich texture and historical contrast. It can be paired with neutral walls and contemporary lighting to balance old and new.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Regular treatment with high-quality beeswax nourishes the wood and protects the historic patina without damaging the finish.
