Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French form of flat-top writing table featuring a shallow frieze with drawers, supported by legs. The design emerged in France during the late seventeenth century under Louis XIV and reached its height of popularity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Traditional construction incorporates fine timber veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood over an oak frame. The piece typically features cast gilt bronze ormolu mounts, decorative keyhole escutcheons, and a gold-tooled leather writing surface inset into the top.

Authentic nineteenth-century mounts show fine hand-chasing, crisp detail, and evidence of hand-casting such as irregular fixing pin placements on the reverse. The gilding often demonstrates gentle wear on raised areas, revealing the underlying cast metal.

Position the bureau plat in the centre of a home office or library space to allow visibility from all angles. Pair it with a simple contemporary desk chair or a classic leather armchair to create a balanced focal point.

Dust timber surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. Clean gilt bronze mounts using a dry soft brush, avoiding chemical brass cleaners which strip the original gilding and patination.
