Originating in 17th-century France, a bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table featuring frieze drawers and decorative mounts. During the mid-19th century Napoleon III period, cabinetmakers revived Louis XV proportions, incorporating rosewood veneers and gilded brass fittings.
