Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Louis XV style, prevalent during the 18th century and widely revived in the 19th century, is characterised by Rococo influences, asymmetrical curves, cabriole legs, and ornate gilt-bronze mounts. Pieces prioritised comfort, intimacy, and fluid organic form over rigid classical geometry.

A traditional bureau plat was constructed using an oak carcass veneered with exotic hardwoods such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood, often in parquetry or marquetry patterns. The top surface typically featured a tooled leather insert, accented by cast, chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) corner mounts, sabots, and drawer pulls.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, hand-chased heavy bronze mounts with maker or foundry marks, and evidence of natural age oxidation on unexposed timber backings. Authentic period pieces also display fine veneering techniques and uneven, hand-tooled finish variations.

Position the desk centrally in a room or home office to allow the finished front and back profile to be visible from all angles. Pair the piece with streamlined modern seating or neutral upholstery to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary minimalist design.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent veneer lifting. Clean the leather insert with specialised leather wax conditioner, avoiding harsh chemicals on the gilt-bronze mounts.
