A Fine English Bureau Plat

19th century
Description

A fine English bureau plat. In quality mahogany and raised on turned and fluted legs with brass cap feet and foliate adornments. Above are three, oak lined, frieze drawers and a banded top, with inset black leather writing surface, all with cast brass moldings. The table is finished all around meaning it is a " stand alone piece". In very good and original condition and bearing the makers stamp "C. Mellier" on the underside. 760mm high, 1070mm wide and 590mm deep. English. Circa 1885.

Charles Mellier was first listed in London directories as an upholsterer at 2 Frith Street, Soho in 1870. This address was a shop established in 1861 by Georges-Alphonse Monbro (1807-84), the renowned Parisian cabinet maker. It has been said that Mellier bought the London shop on his death changing the business name to his own but a 1927 advertisement stated that the Mellier business was established in 1865.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table featuring a row of drawers beneath the writing surface, originating in late seventeenth-century France and widely produced throughout Europe.

These writing tables are predominantly constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or kingwood, often decorated with brass or ormolu mounts and lined with a leather insert.

Authentic Louis XVI style examples feature straight, tapered, or fluted legs, symmetrical gilt-bronze or brass mouldings, and balanced Neoclassical geometry rather than Rococo curves.

Place a bureau plat centrally in a home office or drawing room paired with a structured desk chair, framed monochrome prints, and modern brass table lamps.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, and clean the leather inset using a specialised leather conditioner while avoiding polish on brass mounts.
