Victorian Camphor Wood Military Campaign Secretaire Chest

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A fine and rare Victorian military campaign secretaire chest, dating from around 1840. Beautifully constructed from richly figured camphor wood, this piece was designed for use by British officers during overseas campaigns, most likely in colonial India or the East. Camphor wood was highly prized not only for its attractive grain and warm tone but also for its distinctive aromatic scent and natural resistance to insects, making it ideal for travel furniture.

The chest is built in two sections, allowing for easier transportation—an essential feature of true campaign furniture. Its clean lines and solid construction are complemented by recessed brass campaign handles.

At the top of the chest is a well-appointed secretaire compartment, concealed behind a fall-front panel that opens to reveal a new leather-lined writing surface hand dyed to create a soft olive green colour. The interior is fitted with a series of small drawers, pigeonholes for documents, and a central cupboard with a turned handle.

Below the writing compartment are two short drawers above 2 full width drawers, each fitted with inset brass handles and brass escutcheons.

This secretaire chest remains in excellent antique condition, there is however a slight warp in the top surface due to the nature of the wood.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A military campaign secretaire chest is a multi-functional piece of nineteenth-century furniture designed for armed forces officers to transport during military deployments. It breaks down into two separate sections for travel and features a fitted drop-front drawer that serves as a portable writing desk.

Campaign furniture typically utilizes dense hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or aromatic camphor wood, which resists pest damage and environmental changes. Key hardware includes flush-mounted brass corner straps, recessed drawer handles, and removable feet engineered to withstand frequent transport.

Authentic Victorian campaign chests feature flush-fitting brass hardware, brass carrying handles on the sides, and a visible horizontal split where the upper and lower sections separate. Original pieces often display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, screw-off feet, and occasionally maker plates from specialized military outfitters.

A campaign secretaire chest functions well as a focal point in a home office, bedroom, or living area. Its structured silhouette and flush brass details pair seamlessly with modern abstract artwork, contemporary table lamps, and understated minimalist decor.

Preserve the wood finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish periodically along the grain. Clean the brass hardware using a damp cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip the original aged patina.
