Regency Gilt and Gesso Rectangular Wall Mirror Hoho Bird Crest

Description

A delightful and most unusual gilt and gesso over mirror in super condition dating from the late Regency period circa 1820. The original mirror glass sits within a moulded and stiff leaf carved frame surmounted by a grand gilded ho-ho bird with decorative porcelain floral mounts in lovely pastel shades.

This is a most unusual and rare piece and a nice size measuring 74cms by 72cms overall.

FAQs

Regency style mirrors, produced in Britain during the early 19th century, feature classical symmetry, ornate gilded finishes, and dramatic cresting motifs such as eagles, sphinxes, or hoho birds.

These mirrors were crafted using carved pine or lime wood frames covered with layers of gesso, onto which gold leaf was applied and burnished. The reflective panel consisted of mercury-backed plate glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural wear or cracking in the gesso, subtle oxidisation or foxing on the glass, and hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboard.

Position the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table to reflect natural light and provide a focal point within contemporary or traditional spaces.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Avoid water, commercial spray cleaners, or liquid solvents, as these will dissolve water gilding and damage the gesso base.
