Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They served both functional and decorative purposes, reflecting natural daylight and candlelight to brighten grand reception rooms while emphasizing high architectural ceilings.

Nineteenth-century frames were typically built from softwoods such as pine, covered in layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and binderto allow for fine detailed moulding. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques to achieve a bright or burnished metallic surface.

Authentic period mirrors feature carved wood or applied gesso detail over a timber backing, often showing natural age-related crazing (crackled lines) in the gesso surface. The reverse should exhibit dark, oxidized wood backing boards, hand-cut nails, or historical wiring consistent with original construction methods.

Positioning an arched mirror above a traditional chimney breast anchors the focal point of a living or dining room. The curved profile breaks up straight architectural lines and pairs effectively with neutral colour palettes, modern minimalism, or classic period decor.

Gilding and gesso are sensitive to moisture and chemical solvents, so water and spray glass cleaners must be avoided near the frame. Dust the gilded surface gently with a soft, dry feather duster or clean soft brush, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth applied with minimal pressure.
