Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian mahogany glazed bookcase typically features a two-part construction comprising an upper display section with glass-fronted doors and a solid lower cupboard base. Constructed during the 19th century, these pieces were designed to store and display literature while protecting volumes from dust.

These bookcases were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany framework paired with flame mahogany veneers on panels and friezes. Construction features often include hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon framing, float glass pane glazing, and hand-turned wooden knobs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of historical craftsmanship, such as irregular thickness in hand-blown float glass, hand-sawn timber marks on backboards, and natural oxidisation inside drawers. Original brass locks, escutcheons, and period-correct shelf support mechanisms also indicate age.

A traditional glazed bookcase can be integrated into contemporary spaces by curating internal displays with a mix of ceramics, framed artwork, and books. Placing the piece against neutral or deeply saturated wall tones creates balance between historical woodwork and modern decor.

To preserve mahogany timber, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually using a soft cotton cloth to maintain the finish and prevent drying out. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to minimise timber movement and wood fading.
