Antique Heriz Rug

Description

As near to being in perfect condition as an antique rug can be! A rare small and almost square antique Heriz rug of the highest order, very rare to find one in good pile, and with the best natural dyes.

The larger border design is often known as the so-called "turtle" pattern, which has probably been derived from the interlacing arabesques that appeared in rugs at least as early as the beginning of the 15th Century.  The rosette and attendant leaves between adjacent “turtles” show the other ancient 'Herati' pattern. Which has been stylised from two fish swimming around a water-lily over the centuries.  This is more often seen on larger carpets from Heriz, so rare to see in a small rug.

Heriz rugs originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, situated near Mount Sabalan. Woven predominantly by village artisans, these rugs are distinguished by their bold, geometric interpretations of classical Persian floral patterns, featuring prominent central medallions and angular corner spandrels.

These rugs are hand-knotted using durable sheep wool pile on a strong cotton warp and weft foundation. Woven with symmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knots, the local wool is rich in copper trace elements from regional water sources, contributing to high fiber strength and dye absorption.

Authentic pieces display angular, rectilinear geometry rather than smooth curvilinear lines, alongside a thick wool pile and sturdy handle. The reverse side reveals hand-knotted irregularities in stitch tension and natural abrash, which refers to subtle tonal variations in the vegetable dyes.
