Heriz Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

Heriz rugs are popular decorative pieces with their robust construction and rich colours. This one has a softer palette, dominated by the light madder red and cream. The addition of the soft purple is welcome as is the space the design affords.

Heriz designs can be complex and crowded but this particular carpet allows room for the motifs to breathe and has the look of the finer Serapi examples. The central medallion despite being huge doesn’t fully dominate as the eye is drawn to the cream spandrels where the interlocking motifs are seen more clearly. I always find these big Heriz carpets mesmerising, I struggle to take in the whole design as my eye is drawn from one motif to another. I often talk about tribal rugs having a magic that workshop pieces don’t but Heriz carpets do have something special about them.

Good condition with a little wear as to be expected for a rug of this age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran and are recognised by their durable hand-knotted wool construction, geometric central medallions, and structured angular patterns.

Heriz carpets feature a thick, high-quality wool pile hand-knotted onto a strong cotton warp and weft foundation, frequently dyed using natural vegetable and plant extracts.

Authentic Heriz rugs display distinctive rectilinear geometric motifs, large central star-shaped medallions, robust knotting on cotton foundations, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

A Heriz carpet acts as an anchor in living areas or dining rooms, balancing sleek modern furniture with rich visual texture, bold colour tones, and historical character.

Maintenance involves regular vacuuming without a rotating brush bar, immediate blotted spot-cleaning for spills, and periodic professional cleaning to protect the natural wool fibres.
