Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Paste jewellery refers to pieces crafted using leaded glass that was hand-cut and faceted to emulate real gemstones. Popular throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Victorian paste items were highly valued for their exceptional craftsmanship, intricate settings, and brilliant light refraction.

Victorian paste brooches were typically set with hand-cut, high-lead content glass stones. These stones were often mounted in silver settings, sometimes backed with gold, and contained metallic foils underneath to enhance reflectivity.

Authentic pieces usually feature closed-back or silver-topped gold settings, long brooch pins extending past the frame, C-clasps without safety catches, and occasionally subtle darkening or dark spots in the stones caused by moisture reacting with the underlying foil.

A antique paste brooch can be styled on a structured blazer lapel, pinned to a silk scarf, fastened at the high neck of a button-down shirt, or attached to a velvet ribbon as a choker necklace.

Paste jewellery should never be submerged in water or liquid cleaners, as moisture will ruin the delicate metallic foil backing behind the stones. Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and store in a dry environment.
