Pair of Small Art Deco Ruby and Emerald Paste Brooches

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

Two dinky little Art Deco brooches channel set with lovely sparkly old pastes. Likely originating from Austria or Germany, c.1920s.

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

SIZE: 2.7 x 0.2cm

WEIGHT: The green brooch is 1.2g, the pink one is 1.3g.

MATERIALS: Rolled/plated gold on silver.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: The green brooch is stamped 900 (silver fineness) with the sponsor's mark AK on the clasp. The pink pin's clasp is stamped AK.

CONDITION: In good vintage condition; the lines of the frames are a little wavy, especially around the green stones. All the pastes look to be original and are firmly set, with no chips found.

ERA: Art Deco c.1920.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco paste jewellery from the 1920s and 1930s features high-lead cut glass designed to simulate precious gemstones, frequently arranged in geometric, linear patterns.

These ornaments were constructed using hand-cut paste glass stones set into sterling silver, white metal, or plated alloys, often backed with foil to maximize light reflection.

Authentic pieces exhibit era-appropriate clasp mechanisms such as C-catch or safety pin fasteners, geometric stone cuts, and subtle oxidisation along the metal settings.

Bar brooches can be styled individually or paired together on coat lapels, pinned to silk scarves, attached to hat ribbons, or secured to shirt collars.

Paste jewellery must be kept away from water and liquid cleaners to prevent moisture from damaging the foil backing; clean gently using a dry, soft cloth.
