Edwardian Silver Paste Brooch Pin

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

A truly beautiful little brooch in solid silver set with myriad sparkling paste gemstones. The central stone has a slight peachy tone, like a pale peach sapphire or light citrine, surrounded by old-cut white pastes, graduated in size and all well-matched in colour. A timeless little piece which looks fantastic on a dark jacket or dress!

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian paste brooch is a decorative jewellery piece created during the early 20th century featuring cut leaded-glass stones set in metal, designed to simulate the dispersion and sparkle of diamonds.

Antique paste items were crafted using dense lead glass containing high crystal content, mounted into sterling silver, silver-topped gold, or base metal settings often backed with metallic foil.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut faceted glass, closed-back or foil-backed settings with characteristic darkening over time, and refined metalwork typical of early 1900s manufacturing techniques.

An antique brooch can be affixed to a tailored coat lapel, secured at the neckline of a blouse, fastened to a silk scarf, or attached to a fabric evening clutch.

Paste jewellery must be kept away from water and liquids to avoid damaging the underlying metallic foil, requiring gentle dusting with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
