Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Adam style mirrors feature classical Neoclassical motifs inspired by ancient Roman and Greek architecture, including festoons, swags, foliage, and scroll crestings. Developed by architect Robert Adam in the 18th century, these designs emphasise symmetry, delicate ornamentation, and balanced proportions.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were constructed using timber frames carved with details or augmented with composition mouldings, which were then coated in gesso and clay bole before applying fine gold leaf. Water gilding or oil gilding techniques were used to create a reflective metallic surface over the prepared substrate.

Authentic Neoclassical giltwood mirrors show signs of age, such as fine cracking in the gesso surface, reddish clay bole showing through worn gilding, and hand-carved joinery on the reverse timber frame. Modern reproductions frequently rely on resin mouldings, uniform spray paint, and modern backing materials.

An Adam style giltwood mirror works positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard. Placing the gold ornamentation against a contemporary neutral or deep-toned backdrop creates a focal point that bridges traditional and modern interior schemes.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or solvents that dissolve gold leaf or damage the underlying gesso. Mirror glass should be cleaned by applying spray directly to a cloth rather than onto the frame to avoid moisture seepage.
