Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Twisted brass candlesticks featuring spiral or barley-twist stems gained wide popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, drawing stylistic inspiration from seventeenth-century Jacobean design. Technological developments in metal casting during the late nineteenth century permitted manufacturers to produce detailed open-twist stems efficiently for residential interiors.

These pieces were predominantly cast from brass, an alloy composed of copper and zinc. The circular base, open-twist stem section, and upper sconce were typically cast as individual components, joined via internal threaded steel rods, and hand-finished on a lathe.

Original pieces generally display substantial physical weight, subtle hand-finishing marks, and threaded steel assembly rods visible beneath the base. Unlike modern cast reproductions, period items often exhibit natural oxidisation in the recessed turns of the stem and gentle surface wear from historical handling.

Pairing brass candlesticks on a dining table, marble console, or fireplace mantelpiece introduces warm metallic accents to contemporary rooms. Arranging them alongside modern ceramics or natural wood surfaces creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist aesthetics.

Regular maintenance involves wiping the metal with a soft microfibre cloth to remove dust and oils. Soften spilled candle wax by applying warm water before wiping gently with a non-abrasive cloth, avoiding aggressive chemical cleaners or wire wool that can scratch the brass finish.
