Small 18th Century Miniature Mahogany Chest

18th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive And Particularly Charming Mid 18th Century, Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest, Retaining Exceptional Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Two Short And Three Long Drawers, Retaining Original Brass Ring Handles, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

Although there has always been a large amount of discussion and conjecture as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture it will be almost impossoble for a definitive answer to be given for by far the majority of surviving pieces.

The two well known and accepted purposes were either as an apprentice piece, meaning that the item may well have been made by a hopeful young man looking to secure himself a job at the local cabinet making workshop and using the piece as an audition for entry, or alternatively as a travelling salesmans sample piece where scale models of the full size items which a workshop could produce were created, allowing the salesman to take them away and use them for taking orders.

We believe that this wonderful little antique miniature chest is almost certainly a salesmans sample piece due to its overall quality and charm, alongside the use of high end mahogany which probably wouldn't have been available for the apprentices to use.

It has aged extremely gracefully and is one of our favourite miniature chest of drawers which we have ever had in stock. It just has such warmth and charm and elegance.

Overall the condition is very good and it has been inspected by our specialist antique furniture restorers before being placed on sale, as well as receiving a natural wax polish to ensure its in excellent condition for purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A miniature chest of drawers is a scaled-down cabinet traditionally crafted during the 18th and 19th centuries as an apprentice piece, a cabinetmakers sample, or a tabletop chest for jewellery and trinkets.

Miniature furniture from this period was constructed using native hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, oak, and pine, paired with cast brass hardware including ring handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period miniatures exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, hand-turned brass fittings, uneven wear patterns, and genuine timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Miniature chests serve as accent pieces on sideboards, desks, or bookshelves, functioning as desktop storage for stationery or jewellery while adding historical scale and texture to a room.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources, clean surfaces with a soft dry microfiber cloth, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish annually.
