19th Century Victorian Miniature Bowfront Chest

19th century
Description

A 19th Century Victorian Period Mahogany Miniature Chest Of Drawers, Of Attractive Bowfronted Form, Having Well Figured Top Over Two Short And Three Long Drawers, With Repalcement Turned Brass Knobs, Raised On Elegant Splayed Bracket Feet With Shaped Apron.

It’s quite difficult to distinguish whether this particular miniature chest would have been made as an apprentice piece, or indeed as a sample piece, however either way it is most attractive and an extremely sweet size. It also retains its original splayed feet with a lovely elegant shaped apron.

There is much debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a selection of items were produced as scale models by a well established workshop, as a form of physical catalogue, in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use as demonstrators when trying to fill his order book.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has received a natural wax polish in our workshops before being offered for sale to ensure that its in the best possible condition. There is various historic old repairs and historic chips, cracks, scratches etc which all blend in with the overall feel of the piece now.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature chests were frequently created in the nineteenth century as apprentice pieces to demonstrate a craftsmans skill or as travelling salesman samples to showcase furniture designs to prospective buyers.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, lined with pine or oak drawers, and fitted with small brass or turned wooden knobs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, age-appropriate timber shrinkage around the drawer bottoms, authentic patination on brass hardware, and hand-planed secondary woods.

Miniature chests function well as elevated storage solutions on a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf, serving as practical holders for keys, stationery, or fine jewellery.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the object away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent wood movement.
