Georgian Mahogany Miniature Bowfront Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Bowfronted Mahogany Miniature Chest Having Very Well Figured Top, Over Two Short And Three Long Drawers, With Replacement Turned Brass Knobs, Raised On Elegant Original Splay Bracket Feet.

A good example of georgian miniature furniture this little bowfront chest is particularly charming, made using extremely well figured mahogany timbers and it stands with real elegance and importance for something of relatively small scale.

The brass turned knobs are replacements, although they have certainly been in place for a significant amount of time and sit very well on the piece and also it stands on its original bracket feet which are incredibly elegant. Almost certainly this was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece of furniture originally.

There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models buy a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts.

It is certain that this is both a useful and attractive piece of antique miniature furniture and remains in good condition, ready to be placed straight into the home. It would work wonderfully on top of a dressing table, or full size chest of drawers, in a bedroom for storage of cuff links, jewellery or similar small but valuable items. It is also just about large enough to be used as a little coffee table, or lamp table, or similar.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has received a natural wax polish in our workshops before being offered for sale to ensure that its in the best possible condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature chests of drawers from the Georgian era were scaled-down versions of full-size domestic furniture, frequently produced by cabinetmakers as trade samples or apprentice pieces to demonstrate technical capability and proportions.

These pieces were typically crafted using flame mahogany or walnut veneers over native softwoods, incorporating hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak or pine drawer linings, and cast brass knobs or handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit historic construction indicators including irregular hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage marks, natural oxidisation on backboards, and proportioned period hardware.

A miniature chest functions effectively as an accent piece placed atop a sideboard, hallway console, or dressing table, offering compact storage for jewellery and small personal items.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and applying a pure beeswax polish annually. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting.
