Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest

19th century
Description

A Late 18th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest Retaining Good Colour Throughout, With Rectangular Top Over Four Well Figured Long Drawers Having Replacement Brass Handles Raised On Elegant Splayed Bracket Feet With Shaped Apron.

Opinions often differ as to the original purpose for many items of miniature furniture in terms of whether it was was made as an apprentice piece, which is when an unemployed craftsmen would create an item in the workshops at which he was looking to gain employment as a way of showcasing his talents, or alternatively whether it was made as a travelling salesman’s sample piece involving a few items being made as scale models in advance of a road trip during which a salesman travels the country showing prospective clients the kind of items which could be produced back at the workshop, with the intention of taking orders to return home with.

In all honesty this particular antique miniature chest of drawers could fit either of those briefs, although our best guess would be that it was made by an apprentice. It retains a lovely warm colour and is constructed from well figured mahogany.

The handles are later replacements but are still of a style which was widely used in the late 19th century. The drawers still operate smoothly and the elegant splayed feet are original. It comes with working locks and key having been cleaned and polished in the traditional manner at our workshops before being offered for sale.

Height 18.75in.

Width 18in.

Depth 10in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian miniature chests were frequently constructed during the eighteenth century as apprentice pieces to showcase craftsmanship or as portable salesman samples for cabinetmakers displaying design proportions.

These pieces were typically crafted using dense Cuban mahogany or native timbers, featuring secondary pine or oak drawer linings, hand-cut dovetails, and cast brass handles.

Authentic period examples exhibit original hand-sawn timber marks, natural wood shrinkage over time, hand-chiselled dovetail joints, and historic surface patination on both wood and brassware.

Position the piece atop a sideboard, console table, or writing desk to serve as organized storage for personal items, jewellery, or stationery items.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid exposure to direct sunlight or humidity fluctuations, and apply beeswax sparingly along the wood grain.
