Pair of fine paintings of the exterior of Gwydir Castle, near Llanrwst in the Conwy valley, north Wales, showing the wonderful gardens for which the mansion is famous.
The artist is Samuel Sidley, who was a portrait painter and was part of the group that formed under the name of the Royal Cambrian Academy, which had its headquarters in Plasmawr, the historic Elizabethan town house in Conwy.
They are a companion to the pair of the interiors, signed and dated 1866, that feature in ''Welsh Furniture 1250-1950: A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design'' (Saer 2007), plates 128 and129.
Samuel Sidley stayed as a guest of the owner, Lord Willoughby d''Eresby, in 1866. This is recorded on labels on the reverse of one of the paintings from each pair. The label from this pair reads:

Excellent condition, recently professionally cleaned and framed in attractive period-style frames.
