Antique Baktiari Rug

Description

An early antique Baktiari rug woven around 1890-1900, the design is very elegant and refined, often in a repeating garden design or using tribal angular motifs this rug is much more floral and classical.   The intricate latticework in the main field background has been done exquisitely and proportion wise the design has been woven with great symmetry.  The colours are delicate and muted due to the rugs age with soft pale blue corners and muted reds, pinks and greens.  The pale ivory central medallion allows the deeper colours to really sing and create a beautiful antique rug to enhance a room.

This is a fine example of a 'Haft Shotor’ Baktiari rug, woven with great detail and colour.  Condition wise this refined rug is in very good original order with both ends/fringes complete and secure and the sides/selvedges wrapped and secured also.  The main wool pile of the rug is very good indeed with the pile cut tightly and short, it has preserved extremely well due to the rugs quality of wool and dyes.  A very durable and decorative rug ready to be used on the floor.

Bakhtiari rugs originate from the Bakhtiari nomadic tribes and settled villagers in the Zagros Mountains region of Iran. Characterised by robust construction and distinct geometric or floral medallion layouts, these floor coverings historically combine nomadic tribal influences with urban Persian design traditions.

Traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool on a cotton or wool foundation, Bakhtiari carpets utilize symmetrical (Turkish) knots. The pile is clipped dense and durable, dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes to produce rich reds, blues, creams, and earthy tones.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical natural abrash colour variations in the wool, slightly irregular hand-knotted weaving on the reverse side, and heavy cotton warps. Common design motifs include repeated panel designs (garden compartment style) or large diamond-shaped central medallions.
