Superb Flame Mahogany Eight Day Longcase Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present a very sweet eight day longcase clock having just enjoyed full and sympathetic restorations performed to the case, dial and movement.

Dating from circa 1851, in lovely condition and standing 2.17m (7 feet 1 inches) tall, the flame mahogany case is surmounted by a hood with fretwork cresting and supporting three brass finials. Reeded pillars with brass capitals to top and bottom flank the masked hood door to the front and the hood is inlaid with boxwood and retains its wonderful original door knob. The trunk has chamfered sides and the boxwood inlay extends here and to the trunk door which retains its working key and lock. The clock stands on mahogany feet with the base also benefitting from boxwood inlay.

The very pretty arched 12 inch dial is signed 'J. Freeman, Highworth' and is in fabulous condition being a fine example of a painted dial with seconds sub-dial and working date window. The original three matching pierced brass hands complete the impressive appearance.

The four pillar, rack-striking anchor escapement movement has been fully refurbished with new lines provided and the clock strikes the full hours on a beautifully mellow bell. The weights are a matching pair and the clock benefits from my three year guarantee.

This clock really is a beautiful piece of furniture and being of demure proportions is easier to find a home for within a house. Delivery and set-up is available.

John Freeman lived and worked in the High Street in Highworth, just outside Swindon and was registered there in the 1851 census. Born in Bourton in 1807 he was a master clockmaker employing journeymen clockmakers to assist him.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock encased in timber cabinetwork. An eight-day movement mechanism requires winding only once a week, driven by two heavy weights for timekeeping and striking functions.

Traditional Georgian longcase clocks feature cabinets crafted from solid and veneered hardwoods, particularly flame mahogany and oak, decorated with stringing inlays or crossbanding. Clock faces were typically crafted from painted iron plates or brass, accompanied by cast brass movement components and decorative finials.

Authentic antique longcase clocks exhibit hand-crafted construction features, including hand-cut dovetail cabinet joints, irregularities in the rear timber panels, and hand-turned gear wheels. Look for maker signatures painted directly on the dial face alongside period-appropriate operational wear on the winding arbors.

A mahogany longcase clock functions as a strong architectural focal point in an entryway, hallway, or reception room. Displaying the clock against a neutral backdrop creates a striking visual contrast, allowing the warm timber tones and period details to complement minimalist contemporary furnishings.

Position the clock on a level floor away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting. Maintain the wooden case using a natural beeswax polish applied in the direction of the grain, and ensure the mechanical movement receives professional cleaning and oiling every three to five years.
