DESCRIPTION:

This is fabulous antique Georgian oak and walnut cross banded longcase clock which dates to circa 1720 / 1740. The dial is signed SAMUEL YOUNG NANTWICH and Samuel Young is also recorded as working from BUNBURY and made the sundial for the church at Bunbury in 1749. It has an eight-day movement on a brass square dial with a subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The clock is in perfect working order having recently been professionally cleaned and serviced. This clock is absolutely perfect for anyone looking for a clock to place straight into their home.

If we start with the hood, this has a superb pagoda top incorporating some lovely blind fretwork. The top has a nice deep moulding. Lovely full turned columns flank the hood door with nice half turned columns to the rear. The hood door has lovely walnut cross banding to the outer edge.

If we then move down to the trunk this has beautifully shaped full-length door, which has been nicely cross banded in walnut. The trunk door is then flanked by walnut cross banding. The door also has a wonderful brass escutcheon.

The base has been superbly cross banded in walnut. The base is raised on a pretty shaped plinth.

The eight-day movement with makers name of 'Samuel Young NANTWICH' striking the hour has a square brass dial. It also has a subsidiary second dial and date apperture. The four corners are adorned with beautiful maiden head spandrels. The dial is set out with Roman numerals with Arabic numerals above.

There is one 'Samuel Young NANTWICH' listed in ‘Clockmakers of Cheshire by Keith Appleby' : 'YOUNG. Samuel. NANTWICH. Clockmaker. Father was Peter Young of Bunbury, who was a brewer. Made sundial for church at Bunbury 1749. Samuel Young was made a freeman of Chester 1722.'

He is also recorded as working from Bunbury, Cheshire.

DIMENSIONS:

The approximate dimensions are:

- 85 3/4 inches (218 cm) high to top of clock

- 21 inches (53.5 cm) across the widest part of the hood

- 13 inches (33 cm) across the trunk

- 18 1/4 inches (46.5 cm) across the widest part of the base.

As can be seen from these dimension this is a clock of lovely slim proportions.
