Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian period (19011910), silversmiths crafted small, elaborate boxes intended for dressing tables, vanity sets, and personal accessories. These items often incorporated classical motifs, delicate inlay work, and gilded interiors to protect the silver from tarnishing when holding cosmetics or tablets.

Edwardian boxes typically utilised sterling silver bases paired with materials like genuine or faux tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, or enamel on the lids. The interiors were frequently finished with a gold wash, known as vermeil or gilding, to prevent corrosion from contents.

Authentic British silver pieces feature full hallmark stamps including a makers mark, a town mark, a lion passant denoting sterling silver quality, and a date letter corresponding to the Edwardian era. Inlay designs from this period often display rococo scrolls, garlands, or heraldic cartouches.

Small antique silver boxes function effectively on a bedside table, marble vanity tray, or decorative sideboard stack alongside books. They add texture and historic detail to personal grooming spaces without cluttering modern surfaces.

Clean silver components using a soft microfibre cloth designed for silver polishing, taking care not to let polish contact tortoiseshell or plastic elements. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent warping or chemical degradation of inset materials.
