We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, small sterling silver boxes were crafted primarily for dressing tables to house items such as pins, jewellery, or stamps. These decorative caskets frequently displayed elaborate repousse ornamentation inspired by Rococo revival and floral patterns popular in the late Victorian period.

These boxes were constructed from sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent other metals, usually copper, to add structural strength. Artisans employed repousse and chasing techniques, hammering the metal from the reverse side to create raised relief patterns and detailing the surface from the front.

Authentic British pieces bear a full set of hallmark stamps including the lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office symbol, a date letter, and a makers mark. The presence of these distinct hallmarks, along with period-appropriate hand-chased construction details, confirms authenticity and dating.

Positioning a silver box on a bedside table, dressing table, or vanity tray adds metallic texture and contrast against contemporary surfaces. It functions as storage for everyday jewellery or serves as a decorative accent within a styled shelf display.

Silver should be cleaned periodically using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish. Avoid submerging items in harsh chemical dips, and store them in low-humidity environments or anti-tarnish cloth bags to prevent rapid oxidisation.
