River Landscape II - Antique Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

Oil on canvas showing an attractive river landscape. The painting is mounted in a gilt frame with black slip. It is signed by the Artist Georges Lemmers (1871 - 1944)

Georges (Ferdinand-Georges) Lemmers was a Belgian artist, born in Antwerp in 1871 and died in Lisbon/Portugal in 1944. He was a painter, draftsman, pastelist, watercolorist and occasionally a sculptor. He was educated at the Academy in Antwerp under A. De Vriendt, at the Academy in Mechelen under W. Rosier and sculpture under E. Joris and J. Lambeaux. Among other things, he realized figures, realistic nudes, classical portraits, interiors, still lifes, flowers, landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and open-air scenes. He used an impressionistic, smooth brushwork with a fresh colour palette. During the Second World War he fled to Portugal, continued to work there and died there in 1944. Work by Georges Lemmers can be found in the museums in Brussels, Sint-Joost-ten-Node, Bruges and Antwerp. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. (Piron)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Impressionist landscape paintings focus on capturing transient natural light, atmospheric conditions, and water reflections using visible, textured brushwork rather than rigid photographic detail.

Artists traditionally used oil paints composed of natural pigments bound with drying oils, applied directly onto stretched linen or cotton canvas panels.

Authentic works feature age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint layer, natural surface oxidation, period-correct canvas weave, and hand-applied signatures or canvas maker stamps.

Display the painting as a focal accent above a sideboard or mantelpiece, combining traditional framed artwork with clean-lined modern furniture and modern accent lighting.

Store and display the artwork away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and high humidity, dusting the surface gently with a soft dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
