Isfahan Rug, Persia, Circa 1890, 2.02m X 1.44m

19th century
Description

Strictly speaking, one should describe this rug as an Isfahan 'village' rug as it was woven in the villages on the outskirts of the city. However, provincial Persian rugs have often been attributed to the location in which they were marketed. This rug nevertheless bears the hallmarks of a classic Isfahan design as the weavers were influenced by the urban carpets of nearby Isfahan. It has fine soft wool and a rich range of colours all derived from natural sources. The repeating floral design of quatrefoils and medallions on a sapphire blue background departs from the typical Isfahan central medallion design, and is framed beautifully by a burgundy palmette border. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in very good condition, with good even pile and only minor signs of wear. The original kilim ends and selvages are intact. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Isfahan rugs originate from the city of Isfahan in central Iran, a historical centre of carpet production known for detailed floral scrolling designs, medallion layouts, and high knot density.

These carpets were typically woven using spun wool pile knotting on a durable cotton or silk warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural plant and insect dyes.

Authentic pieces display slight variations in colour known as abrash, soft wear patterns consistent with age, irregular hand-bound selvedges, and exposed knot structures visible on the reverse side.

A patterned Persian rug serves as a foundational textile in modern rooms, grounding minimalist furniture with warm tones and geometric visual weight when placed under a central seating arrangement.

Vacuum gently without using a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, use a dedicated underlay, and clean spills immediately with neutral water-based solutions.
