George V Tortoiseshell Leather Wing Chair

1920 - 1940
Description

George V tortoiseshell leather wing chair

This Tortoiseshell leather wing chair was made circa 1930.

The chair maker used a classic design of the Georgian period.

I particularly like the shaped back rail and the way the top corners are stepped.

The leather has the wonderful tortoiseshell effect leather finish, giving it a most different and attractive look.

The wing chair with the hundreds of brass headed nails that secure the leather to the wooden frame.

It stands on Chippendale design square front legs that are joined by an H shaped stretcher.

The stuffed seat is lovely and firm and so giving you wonderful support while after a hard day’s toil you can sit back and relax.

Imagine the compliments on your choice and your family and friends vying who can sit in it first!!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George V wing chair is an upholstered armchair produced during the reign of King George V (19101936), characterised by a high backrest, side wings designed to trap fireplace heat, and leather or textile upholstery.

These chairs were constructed using solid hardwood frames, such as beech or oak, fitted with steel coil springs, natural hair stuffing, and hand-patinated hide secured with brass studding.

Authentic pieces feature period construction techniques including hand-tied springs, individual brass nailhead trim, hand-dyed leather displaying natural surface patination, and solid timber legs showing historical wear.

Position the armchair alongside a minimalist side table and modern floor lamp to create a dedicated reading corner, or pair it with contemporary textiles to balance traditional proportions with modern design.

Keep the leather away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, and apply a specialised leather conditioner periodically to preserve flexibility.
