A Fine Late Victorian Leather Wing Armchair

19th century
Description

A good late Victorian wing armchair of smaller but excellent proportions, upholstered in dark brown leather and in the early 18th century style, the toprail with scrolling crest to a buttoned back with well padded wings with studded edges, and with a generous seat with separate cushion and generous armrests with studded ends, on a stuffed base and raised on plain cabriole supports, English circa 1890. Seat dimensions: 20” deep by 19” wide. (51cm by 49cm)

Condition: Overall very good, the chair is solid and robust and well put together, the leather is in very good condition with a few scuffs, fading and general wear consistent with age, but overall the leather is in good condition. Overall the chair has a great appearance with a confident stance and a superb rake to the back, excellent patina and country house look, and it is extremely comfortable to sit in.

Care: Leather chair covers should ideally be polished with a clear shoe polish from time to time (once or twice a year is fine) to maintain the condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian wingback armchair is a high-backed upholstered seat featuring side wings originally designed to shield the sitter from draughts and retain heat from a fireplace.

Victorian leather armchairs typically feature solid hardwood frames, hand-tied coil springs, natural hair stuffing, full-grain leather upholstery, and hand-tacked brass studding.

Authentic late Victorian examples feature hand-tufted deep buttoning, individual brass studding, solid hardwood frames with cabriole or turned front legs, and natural age-related patina on the leather.

A Victorian leather wingback chair functions as a focal accent piece alongside modern minimalism, pairing effectively with contemporary floor lamps, neutral wool rugs, and dark wood shelving.

Antique leather requires regular dusting with a soft dry cloth, periodic application of a specialist leather conditioner to prevent cracking, and positioning away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
