Fine Tekke Carpet, Central Persia, Circa 1880, 3.15m X 2.52m

19th century
Description

Antique Tekke carpets are one of the few groups of antique carpets that always seem to be in demand. Early examples which date before around 1850 are always sought after by Turkoman collectors, while the best ones woven after that date often have great decorative appeal. This carpet falls comfortably into the second category. Finely knotted with exceptional quality wool, the field design is composed of five rows of twelve Tekke guls and secondary gurbaghe guls. The field is dominated by a warm madder red with the use of ivory and navy blue in the details. The border is equally elegant, the so-called sunburst motif combining with other typical Tekke ornaments. Note also the skirts at each end. The limited palette and repeating ornamentation of the design make the composition very easy on the eye. Note too the excellent size which with the additional width makes it a very useful carpet for many room-size situations. Cherished through the generations, this carpet has survived in excellent condition, with a soft velvety pile throughout. It has retained its original selvages and kilim ends. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tekke carpets originate from the Tekke nomadic tribe, historically located across Western and Central Asia. Recognized for their symmetrical layouts and repeating gul or gol octagonal motifs, these textiles were traditionally woven for utility within nomadic dwellings before gaining widespread commercial appeal in the late nineteenth century.

These carpets are constructed primarily from hand-spun wool, used for both the pile and the warp/weft structure. The pile is hand-knotted using natural organic dyes, resulting in rich tones of madder red, deep rust, navy blue, and ivory.

Authenticity is indicated by a fine knot density, natural dye variations ( known as abrash), soft wool pile, and supple handle. Look for traditional row-upon-row alignment of octagonal gols connected by fine, straight lines and detailed geometric end skirts.

A Tekke carpet functions as an anchor in diverse spaces, anchoring minimalist modern furniture or complementing dark wooden joinery. The deep terracotta hues provide warmth when paired with neutral upholstery, polished concrete, or timber flooring.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush attachment prevents dust accumulation within the pile. Professional cleaning should be undertaken by a specialist oriental rug conservator, and direct sunlight exposure should be limited to prevent uneven fading.
