Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in 19th-century European homes as hearths became the central decorative focal point of reception rooms. Designed specifically to fit the space above a fireplace mantel, these mirrors often featured gently curved arched tops to soften linear architectural proportions.

Frame structures from this era typically utilized carved softwoods or hardwoods coated with gesso, a mixture of chalk and binder, allowing craftsmen to form detailed mouldings and beadings. The surface was subsequently painted, gilded, or finished with metal leaf.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural age, including slight cracking or crazing within the gesso layer (known as craquelure) and wear around the frame edges. The original mirror glass may also exhibit subtle foxing, dark spots, or slight distortion in reflections.

Positioning an arched overmantel above a chimney breast draws the eye upward and emphasizes ceiling height. Alternatively, leaning a large-scale mirror against a neutral wall creates an informal, gallery-inspired look that reflects natural light.

Dust the painted frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners that could soften original gesso. Clean the mirror glass gently with a damp cloth, applying liquid glass cleaner directly to the cloth rather than the frame.
