Antique Baluch Rug with Mushwani Type Design, Herat Region, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 5ft 3in x 2ft 10in (160 x 88cm).

Antique Baluch rug from Western Afghanistan, probably Herat region, of small size with a bold Mushwani design giving a very striking visual effect.

Circa 1900.

This striking small Baluch rug has bands of the so called 'Mushwani' design in alternating colours of madder red, green and dark indigo blue, creating a large scale zig zag effect. The simple white ground borders really stand out.

The rug is in good condition with slight even wear and good pile. The rug has excellent soft wool and a floppy handle. The rug retains the original kilim end finish at both ends, with long ivory tassels.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use, or would make a superb wall hanging.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch rugs are hand-woven nomadic textiles originating from the border regions of Persia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, known for geometric motifs and deep, rich colour palettes.

These rugs are constructed using hand-spun wool on wool or goat hair foundations, coloured using natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and minerals.

Authentic pieces feature flexible wool foundations, geometric latch-hook or chevron designs, dark colour schemes, and kilim flat-weave bands at the fringes.

A tribal rug acts as a grounding accent piece, contrasting effectively with natural timber furniture, leather upholstery, or neutral contemporary backgrounds.

Gently vacuum without a rotating brush bar, rotate regularly to ensure balanced wear, and clean spills immediately with cold water or consult a specialist textile restorer.
