Atropos Antiques has dated this Mahogany Collectors Cabinet to the Georgian era.
Africa, south america and many other countries were rich sources for his collections of seeds, insects, bird skins etc ,etc.

Burchells life was tragic and he died a poor man taking his own life in 1863. Early in his career his wife to be had followed him abroad but left him for the captain of the ship that transported her, burchell never married.

His history is extensive and easily researched on the internet. This is one of his cabinets and his collection resides at the oxford university museum.
The cabinet consists of ten deep drawers, eight of which have glazed and hinged lockable lift up lids. The origianl lables relating to the collection have been carefully retained for provenance. The cabinet was made circa 1830. All questions welcome.
