Cameo glass is a specialised form of glass art produced by etching or carving through fused layers of differently coloured glass to create raised designs. While originating in ancient Rome, it experienced a major resurgence during the late 19th and early 20th centuries within the Art Nouveau movement.

Galle vases were crafted by layering multiple casing shades of glass over a base core, before applying hydrofluoric acid to selectively remove outer glass sections. This acid-etching technique revealed the underlying colours and created detailed raised botanical motifs.
