Antique Malayer Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique Malayer rug woven around 110 years ago, woven on an off white background and border colour, with warm red and blue tones, and muted green dyes too.  An unusual large vase design in the main field, similar to that of the famous Zil-e Sultan design.  Zil-e was the eldest of the Shah of Persia around 1840.  As he was not in line to the throne he designed his own royal symbol which is the repeating bird and vase design we see in the centre of this rug, which actually became more famous and used in rugs.

Nice original order, with a medium wool pile height and ends and side secured.  Supplied with our anti-slip underlay, this helps add body and strength to a rug, thus preventing wear.

A Malayer rug is a hand-knotted textile produced in and around the town of Malayer in northwestern Persia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These rugs are recognized for their fine weaving, diverse individualistic patterns, and frequent incorporation of repeating floral or vase motifs.
