Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cast iron garden urns gained widespread popularity during the 19th century as industrial foundries allowed detailed classical designs to be mass-produced for public parks and private country estates. Inspired by Greco-Roman and Renaissance revival styles, these planters became quintessential elements of Victorian garden design.

These pieces were produced by pouring molten iron into multi-piece sand moulds, allowing complex three-dimensional relief patterns such as acanthus leaves and gadrooning. Once cooled, the separate cast sections were joined, ground smooth, and painted to protect the raw metal from exterior elements.

Authentic period cast iron items typically exhibit distinct mould seam lines, crisp casting details, and significant physical weight. Surface wear, including layered paint build-up and localized oxidisation around joints or rims, further indicates genuine historic age rather than modern reproduction.

In addition to outdoor patio positioning, large iron urns serve as dramatic architectural elements in indoor settings such as conservatories, entrance hallways, or garden rooms. They can be left empty as sculptural objects or fitted with potted greenery to add structural focal points.

To prevent structural degradation from rust, maintain the paint layer or seal vulnerable areas of bare metal with microcrystalline wax. Ensure internal drainage holes remain clear of debris to prevent water collection and frost splitting during cold months.
