Set of Eight Georgian Mahogany Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Set Of Eight Early 19th Century, Georgian, Regency Mahogany Dining Chairs, Consisting Of Six Singles And Two Armchairs, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Rails Over Elegant Ribbon Design Horizontal Splats, Over Upholstered Drop In Seats Of Good Bold Proportions, Raised On Elegant Sabre Legs With Square Cross Stretchers.

These chairs are constructed from excellent quality mahogany timbers and are of good bold proportions which in combination with the fact they are extremely sturdy means they are very much functional and fit for purpose. Many later regency dining chairs can be a little smaller and tighter in their proportions making them uncomfortable to sit in for long periods of time but that is certainly not something which is an issue with these particular dining chairs.

Overall the condition is very good with just a few minor, historic repairs, old marks and scratches as one would expect to find on items of this age. There is no major structural defects or issues to speak of and that is always something which is nice to find on antique dining chairs.

As with all items which we offer for sale this piece has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained specialist antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure it is in its best possible condition before being offered for sale.

The chairs have also been relatively recently reupholstered meaning that the fabric is in excellent condition, however the fact that the seats are of the drop in variety means that should the purchaser which to change it for something of their own taste and choice then this can be easily and relatively inexpensively carried out.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian dining chairs typically exhibit neoclassical proportions, crafted from solid mahogany with carved back rails, bar backs, or splats. Design elements often incorporate gentle curves, sabre or turned legs, and drop-in upholstered seats suitable for formal dining spaces.

Primary timber for fine Georgian seating was Cuban or West Indian mahogany due to its strength and rich grain pattern. Frame joinery relied on traditional mortise and tenon joints, while seats were padded using natural materials such as horsehair and webbed webbing.

Authentic period chairs show signs of hand craftsmanship, including subtle irregularities in hand-cut dovetails and mortise joints. The timber displays natural oxidisation and depth of colour, with wear patterns consistent with age along the stretcher rails and armrests.

Georgian mahogany chairs can be paired with contemporary dining tables, such as glass or contemporary oak, to create an eclectic contrast. Re-upholstering the seats in crisp neutral linen or modern geometric fabric bridges the gap between traditional woodworking and modern aesthetics.

Dust timber frames regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish. Keep chairs away from direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent wood movement, and clean textile seats with appropriate fabric upholstery treatments.
