Set of 6 Mahogany Edwardian Chippendale Dining Chairs, C1910

1900 - 1920
Description

Handsome Set of Six (4+2) Edwardian Period Mahogany Chippendale Style Dining Chairs

A handsome set of six antique solid mahogany dining chairs in the classic Chippendale style, dating from around 1910 and comprising two armchairs and four single chairs. The quality is excellent, and the design particularly attractive. The backs are pierced with fine fretwork, and the legs are double stretchered for extra stability. All chairs have drop-in upholstered seats, with the two carvers matching the four singles. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour and patina, and the original polish finish has been retained.

Each chair features a shaped and carved top rail with moulded uprights and a pierced, carved central splat; the armchairs also have shaped and moulded arms. This leads down to drop-in upholstered seats in a neutral fabric, currently in good condition (and easily re-upholstered in a fabric of choice if desired). The chairs stand on square moulded front legs with shaped corner brackets at the top, joined by a double H-stretcher, with splayed back legs.

The seat height is 50 cm. Generously proportioned, these chairs offer both comfort and aesthetic appeal, retaining their original colour and patina to the frames and ensuring they stand out in any setting.

In good condition and crafted in England circa 1910, this set of dining chairs is not only highly functional but also a superb representation of late Georgian design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian Chippendale style chairs reflect an early 20th-century revival of 18th-century designs, featuring intricate pierced splats, serpentine crest rails, and solid construction typically executed in mahogany.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid mahogany timber, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery, drop-in padded seats, and hand-carved back splats.

Edwardian pieces often display early 20th-century tool marks, standardisation in timber thickness, original drop-in seat frames, and construction techniques distinct from 18th-century hand-planed joinery.

Incorporate these classic chairs alongside a contemporary dining table to create a balanced eclectic aesthetic, or reupholster the drop-in seats in contemporary textured fabrics.

Dust the mahogany frames regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity changes.
