Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian shield back dining chairs typically draw inspiration from 18th-century Neoclassical and Hepplewhite designs. They feature a distinct shield-shaped backframe enclosing intricate carved splats, such as urns, drapery, or wheatears, and are predominantly crafted from solid mahogany.

Chairs from this era were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany and walnut, assembled with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Splats and decorative backrests were often hand-carved, while seats were padded and upholstered over webbed frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-carved details, pegged or mortise-and-tenon joints, and natural age-related wear to the timber finish. Proportions are generally lighter and more refined than earlier Victorian revival furniture.

Shield back chairs can be paired with modern or minimalist dining tables to create a curated, eclectic aesthetic. Upholstering the seat cushions in contemporary fabrics or bold velvet colours bridges the historical style with modern colour schemes.

Timber surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with beeswax paste. Velvet upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and immediate spot cleaning with a dry solvent-based cleaner if spills occur.
