London City Antiques has dated these Mahogany Shield Back Chairs to the 19th Century.

Inspired by the celebrated designs of George Hepplewhite, each chair features a graceful shield-shaped back with finely moulded and pierced splats, richly carved lower splat details and elegant serpentine crest rails. The matching carver chairs are particularly impressive, with beautifully shaped swept arms terminating in carved scroll handrests, adding both comfort and distinction. Raised on finely reeded square tapering legs united by stretchers, every chair displays crisp detailing and refined proportions.

This is an exceptional dining set, offering the perfect combination of elegance, comfort and practicality. The original tan leather seats have developed a wonderful patina over more than 130 years, complementing the rich colour and grain of the mahogany beautifully. Ideal for both traditional and contemporary interiors, the two matching carvers create an impressive focal point at either end of a dining table.

Condition Report: Presented in outstanding antique condition. The mahogany frames are structurally sound, sturdy and of exceptional quality, with a beautiful rich colour and mellow patina. The original tan leather seats remain in very good order, displaying attractive age-related wear and natural creasing that add character without detracting from their appearance. Minor surface marks are consistent with age and careful use.
