Late 17th-century furniture, originating in the Jacobean and Carolean eras, is defined by solid oak construction, geometric drawer mouldings, turned bun feet, and heavy proportioning reflecting English joinery traditions.

Chests from this period were predominantly constructed from solid native oak, using mortise and tenon joints fastened with wooden pegs, hand-cut drawer dovetails, and fitted cast brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular hand-cut joinery, iron or wooden side runners for drawers, deep oxidisation in unexposed areas, and geometric applied mouldings.

Pair heavy dark oak chests with minimal contemporary walls, architectural lighting, and modern abstract art to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Maintain historical oak by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying high-grade beeswax once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme moisture fluctuations.
