Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide, horizontally proportioned mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces were crafted to reflect light from chandeliers and candles across reception rooms.

19th-century giltwood frames were constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated with layers of gesso and coloured clay bole. Micro-thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied and burnished, while period mirror plates were crafted using blown glass with mercury amalgams.

Authentic period pieces show subtle wear where the gold leaf has worn back to reveal red bole or white gesso beneath. The back of the frame typically displays dark pine backboards fixed with hand-wrought nails, accompanied by light foxing on the glass plate.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or architectural console to establish an anchor for the room. Combining the elaborate carved frame with understated contemporary furnishings creates a balanced dialogue between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Gilded frames must not be cleaned with water or liquid chemicals, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso foundation. Dust the carving lightly with a soft camel-hair brush, and clean the glass using a dry or slightly dampened microfibre cloth.
