Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a specialized decorative mirror designed with a flat base intended to sit flush atop a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularized in eighteenth and nineteenth-century European interiors, these mirrors were crafted to reflect candlelight and broaden the visual space of reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century mirrors were typically constructed from softwood or timber frames coated with layers of gesso plaster. Intricate decorative elements were molded from composition material before genuine gold leaf was applied over clay bole, housing a silvered or mercury glass plate.

Authentic period mirrors generally feature original hand-sawn timber backboards, evidence of red or dark clay bole showing through worn areas of gilding, and subtle foxing or oxidation spots under the surface of the glass plate.

Position the flat base directly on a fireplace mantelpiece, hall console table, or sideboard top to create an architectural focal point. Leaning a large arched mirror against a neutral painted wall also adds visual depth to contemporary living spaces.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or dry natural-bristle paintbrush. Never apply water, commercial glass spray, or liquid polishes directly onto gilded gesso surfaces, as moisture can dissolve historic gilding adhesives.
