A fine and well proportioned antique giltwood overmantel, dated 1878.

Frame water-gilded to the highest quality using 23.5 carat genuine gold leaf.

Original mirror plate which is date stamped on the rear " August 1878". Plate has very light overall foxing.

Original backing boards, ceramic bun feet and hanging plates.

Sizes 116 cm tall, 108 cm wide at base, main frame width 92.5 cm.

Designed during the nineteenth century, overmantel mirrors were specifically created to sit directly above a fireplace hearth. They functioned to reflect light from candles and gas lamps into the room while serving as a primary architectural focal point in formal reception spaces.

Frames were typically constructed with a carved pine wood core, layered with gesso plaster to create detailed moulding and scrollwork. Water gilding or oil gilding using thin gold leaf was then applied over a clay bole base to finish the exterior.

Authentic pieces generally display original wooden backboards held with hand-cut nails or screws, natural oxidisation or foxing on the silvered glass plate, and slight wear to the gilt finish revealing the red or yellow clay bole underneath.

Place the mirror directly above a fireplace mantlepiece or position it over a hallway console table to add vertical height. The warm gold tone contrasts effectively against contemporary dark paint schemes or neutral plaster walls.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the glass separately using a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding.
